Windows 11 End of Support Explained: How to Check Your PC’s Expiration Date and What to Do Next

by Prakash Dhanasekaran

Most Windows users think their PC will stop working one day. It won’t. What actually happens is easier to miss—and potentially more dangerous. Your computer keeps running, but security updates stop, leaving it exposed to newly discovered threats while everything appears normal.

If you’re running Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro 24H2, that deadline is October 13, 2026. Many people have no idea their support clock is already ticking. Knowing your Windows 11 end of support date now gives you time to decide whether a simple update is enough or whether it’s finally time to replace aging hardware before you’re forced into a rushed purchase.

As technology experts with over 20 years of experience in hardware and application research and development, we evaluate every product with a practical approach. We look beyond marketing claims and focus on real-world performance, durability, repairability, and long-term value for money.

Whether you’re a home user, student, professional, remote worker, small business owner, or someone planning to buy a new Windows laptop or desktop, this guide is designed to help you make a smarter decision.

Our recommendations are based on extensive research, component analysis, real-world usability, official manufacturer documentation, and industry expertise. Instead of simply telling you to upgrade, we’ll show you how to check your Windows support status, explain what really happens after support ends, and help you decide whether upgrading your current PC or buying a new one makes the most financial sense.

Your PC Does Not Expire. Your Windows Version Does.

This distinction matters, and a lot of coverage gets it wrong. Three different things are often called the same thing:

Term What It Actually Means Does the PC Stop Working?
End of Servicing A specific Windows version no longer receives monthly security updates, bug fixes, or feature improvements. No. The PC continues to function, but it is no longer protected by new security updates.
End of Support / End of Life Microsoft stops maintaining an entire Windows product or release, meaning no further official updates or support are provided. No. The operating system continues to run, but using it becomes increasingly risky over time.
License or Evaluation Expiry An Insider Preview build, Enterprise Evaluation edition, or unactivated Windows installation reaches its expiration date. Yes. Windows may perform periodic forced restarts, display activation warnings, or restrict desktop functionality until a valid license is installed.

Only the third one causes a device to become unusable. When people ask what does end of servicing mean windows, the honest answer is narrow: Microsoft stops shipping security fixes for that build number. Nothing on your desktop changes.

So, does my PC stop working when Windows support ends? No. Your files stay put. Your programs open. The change happens quietly, in the background, in the part of Windows you never see.

How to Check Your Windows Version End of Support in Three Steps

This takes under a minute. There is no need for third-party software.

Step 1: Find your version with winver

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run box.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. Read the version number and build — for example, “Version 25H2 (OS Build xxxx)”.

Learning how to check your Windows expiration date using winver is the fastest route, but it has one weakness: the dialog does not always make your edition obvious. That matters more than most people expect.

Step 2: Confirm your edition in Settings

Open Settings > System > About and scroll to Windows specifications. You will see both fields together:

  • Edition — Home, Pro, Pro Education, Enterprise, Education
  • Version — 23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1

Write both down. You need the pair, not just one.

Step 3: Match the pair against Microsoft’s lifecycle table

Take your version and edition to the Windows Lifecycle Policy Search tool on Microsoft Learn. Two identical PCs running 24H2 can have end dates a full year apart if one is Home and the other is Enterprise.

For anyone comfortable with a terminal, this one-liner returns the same information in a copyable form:

PowerShell Get-ComputerInfo | Select WindowsProductName, WindowsVersion, OsBuildNumber

That covers how to find out if my Windows installation is still supported for a single machine. For more than a handful of devices, see the business section further down.

Windows 11 End of Support Date: The Full Table

This is the reference most readers are actually looking for. Dates below come from Microsoft’s release-health documentation.

Windows 11 servicing timeline

Version Released Home / Pro / Pro Education / Pro for Workstations Enterprise / Education / IoT Enterprise
21H2 4 October 2021 10 October 2023 8 October 2024
22H2 20 September 2022 8 October 2024 14 October 2025
23H2 31 October 2023 11 November 2025 (Expired) 10 November 2026
24H2 1 October 2024 13 October 2026 12 October 2027
25H2 30 September 2025 12 October 2027 10 October 2028
26H1 10 February 2026 14 March 2028 13 March 2029

Two dates people mix up constantly: 24H2 Home/Pro ends 13 October 2026, while 25H2 Home/Pro ends 12 October 2027. Different years, nearly the same day.

Windows 10 and ESU timeline

Milestone Date
Windows 10 Version 22H2 End of Support 14 October 2025
Consumer ESU – Original End Date 13 October 2026
Consumer ESU – Extended (Free) End Date 12 October 2027
Commercial ESU – Year 2 13 October 2027
Commercial ESU – Year 3 (Final Security Updates) 13 October 2028
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 End of Support 13 January 2032

That Windows 10 ESU 2027 row is the one most articles have not caught up with. More on it below.

Why Windows 11 Home and Pro Expire Before Enterprise

The Windows 11 Home vs Pro end-of-support difference is a common search, and the answer is slightly counterintuitive: there is no difference between Home and Pro. They share the same 24-month clock.

The split is between consumer editions and organisational ones:

  • Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations — 24 months per feature release
  • Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise — 36 months per feature release

The reasoning is practical. Large organisations need testing windows. A hospital or a bank cannot push a feature update across ten thousand machines the week it lands. Microsoft gives them an extra year of runway.

For a home user, the effect is simple. For Windows 11 Home and Pro, the servicing window is 24 months, which means you will need to accept a feature update roughly every two years, permanently. That is not a one-time event. It is the ongoing cost of running Windows now.

What Actually Happens When Your Version Expires

Nothing visible. That is precisely the problem.

On the day after your date, Windows boots exactly as before. No warning screen. No countdown. What stops is the monthly Patch Tuesday delivery for your specific build.

Here’s what typically happens after your Windows 11 version reaches the end of support:

  • Month 1: No measurable Any vulnerability disclosed this month goes unpatched on your machine.
  • Month 3: Several unpatched flaws now exist Proof-of-concept exploit code typically circulates by this stage.
  • Month 6: Third-party software begins dropping support for the unsupported Some apps stop updating.
  • Month 12+: The machine is a known-vulnerable Automated scanning tools identify unpatched builds trivially.

The risk compounds rather than arriving all at once. That is why the honest advice is not “panic” — it is “put the date in your calendar and act before it, not after.”

The Windows 11 26H1 Curveball Most Guides Ignore

If you bought a laptop in the first half of 2026 and winver returned something unfamiliar, this section explains it.

Windows 11 26H1 differs from previous releases in three important ways:

  1. It is not offered as an in-place You cannot move to 26H1 from 24H2 or 25H2 through Windows Update. It arrives preinstalled or not at all.
  2. At the time of writing, Windows 11 26H1 ships primarily on Snapdragon X2 ARM hardware. Microsoft built it to enable next-generation silicon.
  3. It cannot take the H2 2026 feature 26H1 runs on a different Windows core than 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft has said the branches reconverge in a later release.

The Windows 11 26H1 end-of-support date is 14 March 2028 for Home and Pro. IoT Enterprise is not supported on this release at all.

Here’s the practical takeaway: if you’re shopping for an ARM-based Windows laptop this year, check which version it ships with. A 26H1 device has a longer support runway than a 25H2 device, but it also sits on a different servicing branch that will require a larger upgrade later. For most people buying an Intel or AMD PC, this isn’t a concern because those systems ship with 25H2 and follow the standard upgrade path.

Still on Windows 10? The Deadline Moved, and Microsoft Barely Mentioned It

This is the single most useful thing in this article, and it is not widely reported.

Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. The free consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme was originally set to run out on 13 October 2026.

On 25 June 2026, Microsoft extended it to 12 October 2027. There was no press release. The change appeared as an editor’s note appended to an existing Windows Experience Blog post and as quiet edits to the ESU documentation.

So if you have been asking, can I still get Windows 10 security updates in 2027 — yes, for eligible devices, at no cost.

How to enrol in consumer ESU

There are three routes, and one of them is free:

Enrolment Method Cost Notes
Sync PC Settings to a Microsoft Account Free The recommended option for most home users. Simply sign in with a Microsoft account and enable PC settings synchronization.
Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards Points Free (using points) A good choice if you’ve already accumulated enough Microsoft Rewards points.
One-Time Purchase $30 + applicable taxes Provides Extended Security Updates (ESU) coverage for up to 10 devices under a single license.

Eligibility rules, stated plainly

Your device qualifies if it runs Windows 10 version 22H2 on Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Pro for Workstations, has the latest updates installed, and is enrolled with a Microsoft account holding administrator rights.

Your device is excluded if it is domain-joined, Microsoft Entra-joined, MDM-managed, running in kiosk mode, already covered by a commercial ESU licence, or signed in with a child account.

Already enrolled? You do not need to do anything. Microsoft rolls existing enrolments to the new date automatically.

The limitation nobody should ignore

ESU delivers critical and important security updates only. It does not include new features, non-security bug fixes, driver updates, or technical support. And Microsoft has announced nothing beyond October 2027 for consumers.

So is Windows 10 still safe to use in 2026? With ESU enrolled, reasonably. Without it, no. Either way, ESU is a bridge with a visible far end. Treat the extra year as planning time, not as a solution.

Your Decision Tree: What to Do Based on Your Date

Find your row. Act accordingly.

Time Remaining on Your Version What to Do
More Than 12 Months No immediate action is required. Make a note of your support end date and continue using your PC normally.
3 to 12 Months Create a calendar reminder, verify your backups, and begin planning your next feature update or hardware upgrade if needed.
Less Than 3 Months Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. If your PC is eligible, Windows will typically offer the next supported version automatically.
Support Already Ended Update your PC as soon as possible. If no upgrade is offered through Windows Update, your hardware compatibility is likely preventing the update.
Cannot Upgrade at All If you’re still using Windows 10, enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (where applicable) and begin planning for a replacement PC or compatible hardware upgrade.

Most people fall into the fourth or fifth row and do not realise it. When Windows Update silently stops offering feature updates, the cause is almost always hardware eligibility rather than a fault.

How to Check If Your PC Can Run Windows 11

Before spending anything, confirm what is actually blocking you. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. It names the specific failed requirement rather than giving a generic refusal.

The Windows 11 minimum requirements are:

Requirement Minimum Requirement How Often It Is the Real Blocker
TPM 2.0 TPM 2.0 must be present and enabled. Very common. In many cases, TPM exists but is simply disabled in the BIOS/UEFI firmware.
Secure Boot System must support UEFI firmware with Secure Boot enabled. Frequently encountered. Secure Boot is often disabled even on compatible systems.
Processor 64-bit processor with at least 2 cores and included on Microsoft’s supported CPU list. The most common permanent compatibility blocker because unsupported CPUs cannot usually be upgraded.
Memory (RAM) Minimum 4GB RAM. Rarely an issue, as most modern PCs already meet or exceed this requirement.
Storage At least 64GB of available storage. Rarely the deciding factor for compatibility on modern systems.
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible GPU with a WDDM 2.0 driver. Rarely prevents installation, as most integrated and dedicated GPUs from recent years satisfy the requirement.

Here is the part worth knowing. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are present but disabled in firmware on a large share of machines built from roughly 2017 onward. Entering BIOS/UEFI and enabling fTPM (AMD) or PTT (Intel) converts many “incompatible” PCs into eligible ones in about five minutes, at zero cost.

Check that first. It is free, and it resolves this for more people than any purchase will. If the processor itself is unsupported, that is where money enters the conversation.

Option 1: Upgrade the PC You Already Own

If your CPU is on Microsoft’s supported list but the machine feels slow, upgrading is usually better value than replacing. A 2018–2020 laptop or desktop with a modern SSD and adequate RAM handles Windows 11 without complaint.

What is worth upgrading, and what it fixes

Upgrade What It Fixes Typical Cost Band Worth It?
SATA SSD (Replacing a Mechanical Hard Drive) Significantly improves boot times, application loading, and overall system responsiveness. Low The single most impactful upgrade for any PC still using a traditional hard disk drive.
NVMe SSD (Replacing an Older SATA SSD) Faster large file transfers, quicker project loading, and improved sustained storage performance. Low to Mid Provides a modest improvement over a healthy SATA SSD during everyday computing.
Upgrade RAM to 16GB Improves multitasking, browser performance, and handling of background applications. Low A noticeable upgrade if your system currently has only 8GB of RAM.
Discrete TPM Module Can enable Windows 11 compatibility on some older desktop motherboards. Very Low Only worthwhile if your motherboard includes a compatible TPM header and does not already support firmware TPM (fTPM/PTT).

What this means for the buyer: if the machine is a 2018-or-newer desktop with a mechanical hard drive, an SSD plus a RAM top-up costs a fraction of a new PC and removes the slowness people usually blame on Windows. If the CPU is unsupported, none of these upgrades make the machine eligible. Spend nothing until PC Health Check tells you which category you are in.

Reliable, widely stocked lines to compare: Crucial MX500 and BX500 (SATA), Crucial P3 Plus and Western Digital Blue SN580 (NVMe), Samsung 990 EVO (NVMe, higher tier), Crucial and Corsair DDR4 SODIMM kits for laptops.

Check current SSD and RAM prices on Amazon US — these components fluctuate week to week, and the mid-tier options frequently drop below entry-level pricing during sales.

Option 2: Buy a New Windows 11 PC

If the processor is unsupported and the machine is already slow, replacement is the cleaner decision. Nearly every new Windows PC sold today comes with Windows 11 preinstalled.

What to actually look for in 2026

Ignore the spec sheet marketing. These four things determine whether a machine still feels usable in 2029:

  1. 16 GB RAM 8 GB is workable today and constraining within two years. On many thin laptops, RAM is soldered and cannot be added later. This is the specification people regret most.
  2. 512 GB SSD 256 GB fills faster than expected once Windows 11 and its updates take their share.
  3. A current-generation Buying last-generation silicon to save a small amount shortens how long the machine stays on Microsoft’s supported list.
  4. A display you can look at all Below 300 nits brightness, laptops become difficult to use near a window.

Which category fits which buyer

Category Best Suited To Key Specification to Insist On What You Give Up
Budget Laptop Web browsing, email, office work, online classes, and video streaming. 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD for smooth multitasking and long-term usability. Premium build quality, brighter displays, and higher-end materials.
Mid-Range Laptop Daily productivity, remote work, studying, and light photo editing. A current-generation processor and a display rated at 300 nits or brighter. Dedicated graphics for demanding gaming or professional creative workloads.
Mini PC / Desktop Replacing an aging desktop or creating a permanent workstation. 16GB RAM with user-upgradeable memory slots for future expansion. Portability and battery-powered operation.
Premium Ultrabook Frequent travelers and professionals needing long battery life in a lightweight design. 16GB+ RAM and a high-quality display with excellent color accuracy and brightness. Higher purchase cost and limited hardware upgrade options.
Refurbished Business Laptop Budget-conscious buyers who still want Windows 11-compatible hardware. Verify TPM 2.0 support and that the processor meets Windows 11 compatibility requirements. Battery health may vary, and the remaining support lifespan may be shorter than with a new PC.

An honest note on refurbished machines. They can be strong value, but they carry a specific risk on this topic: a refurbished 2017 business laptop may run Windows 11 today and still sit near the edge of Microsoft’s supported CPU list. Verify eligibility before buying, not after.

Mini PCs deserve more attention than they get. Compact desktops from Beelink, Minisforum, and similar brands often deliver the performance of a mid-range laptop at a lower cost, with accessible RAM and storage slots. For a desk-bound setup replacing an aging tower, they are frequently the better financial decision than a laptop.

Compare current Windows 11 laptop and mini PC prices on Amazon US — filter for 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage first, then sort by price. That single filter removes most of the machines that will feel dated by 2028.

Option 3: Keep the Hardware, Change the Operating System

If the PC works fine and you would rather not spend, two free operating systems extend its usable life. Both come with real trade-offs, and we would rather state them plainly than oversell the idea.

Alternative Works Well For Genuine Limitation
ChromeOS Flex Web browsing, email, video streaming, cloud-based productivity, and online document editing. Does not support traditional Windows desktop applications or Android apps.
Linux Mint / Zorin OS Everyday computing, office work, programming, and extending the life of older but capable PCs. Some Windows-only software has no direct replacement, and new users may face a learning curve.

The ChromeOS Flex vs Windows 11 old pc comparison usually resolves on one question: does anyone using the machine depend on a specific Windows program? If yes, neither alternative works. If the answer is genuinely no — and for a secondary family PC it often is — ChromeOS Flex turns a 2014 laptop into something that boots quickly and updates itself.

This is also the answer to the Windows 11 expiration date without upgrading hardware. It sidesteps the Windows lifecycle entirely rather than extending it.

Repair, Replace, ESU, or Switch: A Direct Comparison

Path Upfront Cost How Long It Buys You Best For
Enable TPM & Secure Boot in BIOS Free Full Windows 11 support lifecycle Users whose only upgrade blocker is disabled firmware settings.
Upgrade SSD and RAM Low Several more years of practical use PCs with a supported processor that simply need better performance.
Enroll in Windows 10 ESU Free Until 12 October 2027 Users who need extra time before replacing or upgrading their PC.
Install ChromeOS Flex or Linux Free Potentially the remaining life of the hardware Older PCs used primarily for web browsing, office work, or as secondary systems.
Buy a New Windows 11 PC High Longest support runway Primary computers with unsupported processors or aging hardware.

The practical takeaway: Enabling TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot fixes more PCs than most people expect. Check firmware before checking your budget. Replacement is the right call when the CPU is unsupported and the machine is a primary device and it already feels slow. Two out of three usually means upgrade rather than replace.

Pros and Cons of Upgrading Now Versus Waiting

Upgrading Now Waiting Until Closer to the Deadline
Continuous security updates and protection without interruption. Your current PC remains usable until the support deadline.
More time to troubleshoot driver, software, or compatibility issues. Hardware prices may decrease before you purchase a replacement or upgrade.
Avoids the last-minute rush for PCs, upgrades, and technical support. Newer PC models and hardware may become available later in the year.
You still have the standard 10-day Windows 11 rollback window if you need to revert after upgrading. Less time remains to resolve problems if the upgrade or migration doesn’t go as planned.
— Once support ends, the risk from unpatched security vulnerabilities increases with each passing month.

The rollback point is worth knowing. After a feature update, Windows keeps a 10-day window to revert with your files intact. Testing the upgrade is genuinely low-risk within that period.

Back Up Before Any Upgrade

This applies regardless of which path you take. Feature updates rarely fail, but “rarely” is not “never,” and recovery without a backup is not possible.

A straightforward approach:

  • External SSD or portable HDD for a full local Portable drives from Samsung (T7), SanDisk, Western Digital (My Passport), and Seagate cover this at reasonable cost.
  • Cloud storage for documents and photos as a second layer.
  • Verify the backup opens before starting the An unverified backup is an assumption.

View current external drive prices on Amazon US — 1 TB portable drives are the practical sweet spot for most home backups.

For IT Teams and Small Businesses

Consumer advice does not transfer cleanly to a managed fleet. A few points that change the calculation:

  • The Enterprise and Education extra year is not spare time. 24H2 Enterprise runs to 12 October 2027, but planning a migration in the final quarter of a servicing window leaves no room for compatibility problems.
  • Office 2021 reaches end of support on 13 October 2026 — the same day as Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro. Two migrations, one deadline.
  • Windows 11 SE stops at There is no 25H2 for SE. Education deployments must reimage or replace before October 2026.
  • Commercial ESU pricing Year 2 costs more than Year 1, and Year 3 more again, through to October 2028. The economics stop favouring ESU quickly.
  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 runs to 13 January For fixed-function devices, this remains a legitimate long-term option.
  • Consumer ESU excludes managed Domain-joined and Entra-joined machines cannot use the free consumer route. Budget for commercial licensing.

For fleets, audit by build number rather than by asset age. Tools including Lansweeper and Intune reporting will list devices by version and flag those approaching end of servicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is my version of Windows supported?

Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of servicing per feature release. Enterprise and Education receive 36 months. Check your specific version and edition against Microsoft’s lifecycle table.

When does my Windows version expire?

Run winver to get your version, check your edition in Settings > System > About, then match both against the table above. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro ends 13 October 2026.

Does my PC stop working when Windows support ends?

No. The device boots and runs normally. Only monthly security patching stops.

Can I still get Windows 10 security updates in 2027?

Yes. Microsoft extended free consumer ESU to 12 October 2027. Your device must run Windows 10 22H2 and must not be domain-joined, Entra-joined, or MDM-managed.

What is the difference between Windows 11 Home and Pro end of support?

There is none. Both receive 24 months per release. The longer 36-month window applies to Enterprise and Education.

Why is my Windows 11 26H1 date different?

Windows 11 26H1 is a separate release for new Snapdragon X2 hardware, supported to 14 March 2028 on Home and Pro. It is not available as an upgrade on existing PCs.

How do I remove a Windows expiration watermark?

If it relates to activation, activate through Settings > System > Activation. If it relates to an Insider or evaluation build, that copy has a hard expiry and needs a full licensed installation. Run slmgr /dlv to see which applies.

Can I install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware?

Tools such as Rufus can bypass the checks. Microsoft does not guarantee updates on those installations, and some have been excluded from feature updates. We would not recommend it for a machine you depend on.

Final Verdict

The useful takeaway is not a date. It is a habit.

Most consumer Windows PCs now run on a rolling servicing cycle, and the support period resets each time you install a feature update. Checking takes about 30 seconds using winver. Staying ahead of it mostly means letting Windows Update do its job instead of postponing it.

For the eleven weeks between now and 13 October 2026, the priority is narrow:

if winver says 24H2 and your edition is Home or Pro, update. If Windows Update will not offer anything, run PC Health Check and find out whether the blocker is a firmware setting or the processor.

If the problem is a firmware setting, the fix is usually free. An unsupported processor means a spending decision — and in that case, upgrading a supported-but-slow machine with an SSD and RAM is usually better value than replacing it, while an unsupported CPU in a primary machine points toward new hardware.

If you are still on Windows 10, enrol in ESU today. It is free, takes only a few minutes, and extends your security updates through October 2027.

Where to Buy

Prices on components and complete systems move constantly, and the differences between retailers are often larger than the differences between comparable models. Checking current listings before buying takes only a few minutes and can save you money.
